New Earth Voyagers

Game is playable in browser but there may be lag, download is recommended for best experience! 

I created this visual novel for the O2A2 2023 game jam.

I worked on this project as a solo dev. I’ve been interested in visual novel development for a while so this game jam gave me the motivation to get started.

 

Story snippet:

 “The year is 2234, Earth, humanity’s planet of origin, lies in ruin.”

“Samantha, or Sam as she likes to be called, is your close friend and crew member.

…You both work as voyagers aboard the Weevil Light Cruiser, exploring unknown lands and completing other tasks at the request of Fleet Command.”

Game is a short sci-fi adventure, I started watching a lot of sci-fi anime the past 2 months, so I guess that was the inspiration ha.  

I did the story in under a day so… yeah lol 

My main focus was really just to make a functional project.

Rules:

Word Count: 900-1000

One Background Image: during parts of the game the background will zoom in and focus on specific parts of the image, such as planets or the ship log terminal.

One Menu Image: (pause, load, save, start)

One Sound File: one music track plays at times.

One character: I created one character sprite (Sam) which I did a few different things with.

Sam has unique facial animations (eyes and mouth) which change with different dialogue (I looked at Persona 5 as a reference).

During two sections of the game same will appear as a hologram, this is the same character sprite with a blue colour overlay and a mosaic filter applied to appear pixelated.

*No AI was used for this project

5 - 10 minute play time (depending how fast you read)

Gameplay:

Game should be playable without any issues.

Download is recommended as browser may lag (however I was able to play via my iPad in the browser with touch screen with zero lag).

Game is simple go from a to b with a few dialogue choices. Since this this was my first time creating a visual novel (and I had less than a week to put it together) I chose to keep things simple. I will experiment with more advanced features in the future.
